History of the Stamford Museum and Nature Center

The Stamford Museum and Nature Center was founded in 1936 with a vision to create a space where children and families could explore nature, agriculture, astronomy, art, and history. Initially, housed in the Stamford Trust Company building, the museum began as a small “cabinet of curiosities” with collections donated by the community. As it expanded, it moved to a larger location in Courtland Park, but eventually settled on the Henri Bendel estate in 1955, where it remains today.

Over the years, the museum has grown significantly, with the addition of nearby land and facilities. The estate, originally built by Bendel as a summer home, eventually became the foundation for the museum’s current location. Today, it spans 118 acres, including a farm, wildlife areas, and access to local nature trails, attracting over 160,000 visitors annually.
